About Us Jesus & Mary Magdalene (Jesus Christ Superstar)
Community theatre in Shorewood has a long, respected history that spans three-quarters of a century. It all began in 1930, when a Shorewood theatre troupe called The Playshop debuted, performing in the auditorium of Atwater Elementary School for its first five years. A new performance venue presented itself shortly thereafter, when the new Shorewood Auditorium was dedicated in 1936. This dedication was an important community event, as at the time the auditorium was ranked the second-finest school auditorium in the nation, with first place awarded to the prestigious Yale University. The Playshop made the new auditorium its home, and ten years later, the group evolved into The Shorewood Players, an energetic bunch who put on as many as five shows a year. In 1976, after years of producing successful shows, The Shorewood Players reorganized under the Adult Recreation Department of Shorewood School District, an organization with which it maintains its affiliation today.

Under the inspired leadership of Ms. Betty Paige, the group opened its first season with John Guare's black comedy The House of Blue Leaves. In the years to follow, The Shorewood Players began a tradition of providing audiences with a comfortable mix of classic Broadway shows, including The Pajama Game, Anything Goes, Annie Get Your Gun, The Sound of Music, and The King & I, with more modern favorites, such as Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Grease, and Chicago.

In addition to its commitment to producing quality theatre, The Shorewood Players has also brought a number of premiers to the community. These include the Milwaukee area premier of Neil Simon's Laughter on the 23rd Floor, the world premier of Waukesha native David Orgas' play, A Politically Correct Love Story, and the combined Milwaukee/Amateur premier of another Neil Simon play, Jake's Women.

Today, The Shorewood Players continue to live out the mission of its founders, which is to bring quality, affordable theatrical productions to its community by embracing the talents and contributions of the community members, themselves.
